On October 1, 2019, the FBI published a press release regarding October being National Cyber-security awareness month. Recently, internet-enabled crimes and cyber intrusions have become increasingly more sophisticated. Each individual user must be on guard and aware.
One of the most common methods for a cyber attack is a method called phishing. The cyber-criminals will send an email that appears legitimate as if it came from a colleague or supervisor. The email will contain a link with specific instructions to enter their username and password. This ultimately will allow the cyber criminal access to personal data from an electronic device.
National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is hosted by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance every October. Multiple agencies and organizations to include the FBI will collaborate to raise awareness about cybersecurity. During the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the FBI asks every user with a connected device to Own It, Secure It, and Protect It.
