What is Agentic AI and What Are the Risks
Agentic AI represents the next step in the evolution of artificial intelligence. Most people recognize generative AI as a tool that answers questions or generates text. Agentic AI goes beyond that by planning tasks, taking action, and aiming to complete jobs independently. It functions more like a proactive assistant that acts without waiting for a prompt. This marks a significant shift.
Agentic AI differs from generative AI in clear ways. It sets goals. It figures out the steps. It fixes mistakes as it goes. It connects to real systems. It moves files. It runs code. It makes decisions that people did not review first. These ideas were once a theory. Early systems already show these traits. The technology is closer than many think. I have listed a few risks below.
Actions Without Review
Agentic AI follows a goal once the user gives it a prompt. If the goal is unclear, the system may start a task that the user never intended. This creates a real-world impact because the system is not waiting for human approval.
Unintended Chains of Events
Agentic AI builds its own plan. It completes one step and moves to the next. If it misreads the goal it may create a long chain of actions that cause damage even when the first step seemed safe.
Misuse of Cloud and API Services
Agentic AI works faster than human hands. It can hit cloud services or software interfaces in rapid bursts. It may call functions that move data or change settings. A simple mistake can become a major incident when it happens at machine speed.
High Speed System Probing
Agentic AI can analyze a system in seconds. It can identify vulnerabilities similarly to a threat actor. It does not recognize boundaries unless they are defined. A poorly trained system might probe areas that should never be accessed.
Unintended Data Movement
Agentic AI does not understand context unless a human gives it clear limits. If the prompt is vague, the system may copy files or send data to insecure locations. That turns an innocent task into a data exposure event.
Automated Code Impact
Agentic AI possesses the capability to execute scripts and code. If the system relies on incorrect instructions, it may undertake tasks that could compromise critical components. Even a minor script affecting an unintended system has the potential to induce operational downtime.
Excessive Permissions Through Linked Accounts
Users often link AI tools to email, storage, or cloud systems. If the Agentic AI accesses those accounts, it has the same authority as the user. Any mistake then becomes a high-impact mistake.
Small Errors at Large Scale
Agentic AI never tires. Once it starts a task, it continues until it considers the job complete. A minor prompt error can escalate into a major issue because the system repeats the error across multiple files or systems.
People and companies can lower risk with simple measures. Good policies set boundaries on how staff use AI tools. Training helps employees understand what these systems can and can’t do. Regular patching closes easy vulnerabilities that an autonomous system might exploit. CISOs should prepare for future tools that detect and stop unwanted AI activity. Although these defensive systems are not common yet, they will eventually arrive.
End users should restrict permissions for any AI tool. They should avoid connecting AI systems to sensitive accounts. CISOs should implement robust identity controls. They should monitor logs closely. They should include Agentic AI risks in incident response plans. These actions help reduce risk until stronger defenses are in place.
